HVAC Technician

Position Summary
Performs the installation, inspection, maintenance and trouble-shooting of industrial HVAC equipment such as boilers and chillers, light commercial units to include, package, DX and split units and residential units to include split, mini-split and window units. This job requires theoretical knowledge of air conditioning and the production of chilled water as well as practical a mechanical and electrical understanding. Technicians deal with refrigerant and Freon gas which could have a serious environmental effect if improperly handled. Verifies actual hours worked by personnel to reduce manpower expenditure. Completes all tasks in accordance with the local Environmental, Safety and Health directives. Correctly captures data on maintenance work order requests and preventative maintenance inspection forms before upload into a Computer Maintenance Management System (Maximo).
Major Job Activities
- Performs inspections on HVAC systems and components (e.g. heating units, building exhaust fans, ventilation units, etc.) to evaluate condition, identify necessary repairs and repair parts and recommend preventive maintenance improvements
- Uses Maximo to order repair parts, track work order progress and to update a work order status
- Completes and oversees installations of heating and air conditioning equipment and systems to provide enhanced and/or upgraded capabilities
- Conducts repairs on HVAC systems and/or components (e.g. pumps, motors, air handlers, fan coils, piping, etc.)
- Diagnoses causes of problems and/or failures in heating/air conditioning systems for the purpose of identifying equipment and/or systems repair and/or replacement parts needed
- Maintains vehicles, tools and equipment in a serviceable status
- Participates in meetings, workshops, training and seminars
- Requests equipment and supplies to maintain correct inventory amounts and ensure availability of items required to complete necessary installations and/or repairs
- Responds to emergency situations during or after hours
- Fabricates equipment parts to meet specialty needs and/or replace unavailable parts
- Transports a variety of tools, equipment and required supplies to the job site
- Perform other duties as assigned
Material & Equipment Directly Used
- A basic set of hand tools used on the job, such as wrenches, pliers, tape measures, utility knifes, sockets and screwdrivers
- Refrigerant gauges, vacuum pumps, ODS reclaim/recycle equipment, torch sets, temperature reading devices and other HVAC related tools/equipment
- Repair parts used on various types and sizes of HVAC units
Working Environment
Duties will involve the conduct of work in the outdoors with a potential exposure to extreme climatic conditions including frequent dust storms, and high temperatures – up to 130F degrees in the summer months. Potential exposure to chemical or biological agents could exist. Employee use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in certain areas is required. Such PPE includes but is not limited to head, foot, hand, torso, respiratory, vision and hearing protective devices. Normal work week is 48 hours, but must be able to work overtime or shift as required.
Physical Activities
Physical requirements include lifting, climbing, extended sitting or standing, or other physical efforts that are normally required. Minimum Qualifications
Education/Certifications: One year related experience may be substituted for one year of education, if degree is required.
- Requires a high school diploma or equivalent
- Vocational training in HVAC or equivalent required along with a valid US license
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license from country of origin for the purpose of obtaining and maintaining a valid Military or Kuwait Driver’s License
- Mechanical knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
- Must have excellent communication skills in English, both written and oral
Experience
- Minimum two (2) years’ experience as a HVAC Technician
- Completed HVAC technician apprenticeship program required
- Must have an excellent understanding of all safety directives and polices regarding the operation of equipment
- Mechanical knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance
Skills
- Must have excellent communication skills in English, both written and oral
- Knowledge of the tools, equipment, and materials common to the HVAC trade
- Knowledge of applicable HVAC codes
- Knowledge of the mechanical operation of equipment such as window, split and package HVAC units
- Skill in the installation, scheduled and unscheduled maintenance of all types of HVAC systems
Supervisory/Budget Responsibilities
Will be required to oversee FN HVAC Technicians
