Sr. Translator/Editor

 

Background:

Tarjama FZ LLC is a translation and ‘wordsmith’ agency based in Abu Dhabi – United Arab Emirates and branches throughout the MENA region with employees in Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia in addition to the United Arab Emirates. Tarjama began in 2011 and is growing rapidly to become one of the leading linguistic services agencies in the Middle East. Its linguistic services include, but are not limited to: Translation, Editing and Proofreading, Creative Copywriting, Localization, Adaptation, Interpretation, and other language-related services.

Translator

Scope of work:

A translator who is expected to work under minimal supervision and who would provide expected translations within the requested timelines. Tarjama is looking for AR <> EN translators who would be available on a full-time basis. The translators are required to have translation experience within the following domains: General, Commercial, Technical, Financial, Medical, Legal, Magazine, Economic, Literary, Political and Press Release.

Requirements:

  • Degree in linguistics/any related field
  • 5 or more years of experience in translation
  • Excellent spoken and written Arabic and English
  • Experience in Desktop Publishing and the ability to use different software is a plus

Typical work activities

The translation process usually involves a combination of the following:

  • Reading through original material and rewriting it in the target language, ensuring that the meaning of the source text is retained;
  • Using Translation Memory software, such as Wordfast, memoQ, Across, SDL Trados and Transit NXT, to ensure consistency of translation within documents and help efficiency; (Recommended, not obligatory).
  • Using specialist dictionaries, thesauruses, and reference books to find the closest equivalents for terminology and words used;
  • Using appropriate software for presentation and delivery;
  • Researching legal, technical and scientific phraseology to find the correct translation;
  • Liaising with clients and the Operations/Project Management team to discuss any unclear points;
  • Proofreading and editing final translated versions;

·        Providing clients with a grammatically correct, well-expressed final version of the translated text, usually as a word-processed document;

  • Using the internet and email as research tools throughout the translation process;
  • Prioritizing work to meet deadlines;
  • Supplying subtitles for foreign films and television programs;
  • Retaining and developing knowledge on specialist areas of translation;
  • Following various translation-quality standards to ensure legal and ethical obligations to the customer.

A test will be sent to candidates to assess their ability in translation.
